It's important to notice the things that make us smile, no matter the size or shape. Here's some of my happiness from this past week.
The majority of this week was spent creating new chain maille, shining it all up, and working on my display for yesterday's Women Riders Event. The event went really well for me, so much better than what I was anticipating anyway. I really thought that it was going to be more about just promotion for me, but in addition to giving out some business cards & getting names for the mailing list, I also made a few good sales. I'm not sure if I would have gotten those two bigger sales if I didn't accept credit cards: I am really in love with the Square app and reader for my phone! Scott was my wingman, keeping me company (traffic was in spurts), and helping me with set up & tear down. I am so happy that I made those sales! Not just because it feels good that someone loves my work enough to purchase it, but also because I can now reinvest that money into my shop to order some more rubber rings (I'm all out!) and oil to make soap (I'm nearly out !).
I sold another one of my Jeep accessories! I still have a few more ads posted on Craigslist, but this stuff has been a good start & I'm grateful. Work is going to be slim this summer, so anything helps!
I can tell that 3 Day walkers are starting their training for this year's events: I'm getting even more requests for my sore muscle salve! After plenty more requests for my soap, too, I'm going to add some limited supplies of both into the shop this week. The packaging/labeling may not be perfect but it will be available to those that need it. Why is this a simple joy? Because I am so terribly flattered that people are requesting my products.
This week, I attended a webinar with Kiva Rose. She's such a smart, caring herbalist and so generously shared her knowledge. I really learned a lot from her in that short webinar and continue to be inspired by the plants and our Earth.
What were some of your simple joys this week? Share below or write your own blog post (we can exchange links!). I'd love to hear!

Women Riders Event This Saturday!
As those of you that follow me on twitter know (and those that don't, click on the linky over there on the right side bar), I've been busy getting ready for an event this weekend. I've only had about a week to get ready for it, so it's been a bit hectic here in the Armoury.
I've been busy creating some new pieces including scale maille flower pendants, stretchy bracelets, new Pink Warrior pieces, a couple new necklaces, keychains, etc; and herbal goodness including candles and Sleep Pillows.
I downloaded an app for my Android phone called Square which will let me process credit cards through my phone. They sent me a free reader and it only costs 2.75% of each swipe. I tested it out the other day and it couldn't be easier. I love this little thing and can't wait to use it on Saturday.
The Details:
The event is being held at Jim's Harley Davidson in St. Pete this Saturday, May 21; 10:00-2:00. Jim's is teaming up with Bikers Raising Awareness (the non-profit that my 3 Day walking team stemmed from last year) to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. It's a women rider event featuring live music, a poker walk, silent auction, vendors, beer and a 50/50 raffle. Register for $10 and you can attend a slew of seminars about biking, you will get a free lunch, one poker walk hand, a bag full of goodies as well as two chances to win two $100 Jim’s Harley-Davidson Shopping Sprees.
If you're in the area, be sure to stop by (even if you don't register) to check out the live music & vendors. It's going to be a beautiful day and I look forward to meeting you!
If you're a 3 Day walker & still trying to figure out your gear, don't forget to check out my Squidoo lens featuring some of what I found to be Essential 3 Day Gear.

Wordless Wednesday... on Thursday: Sleep Pillow Contents
I've been so busy getting ready for my event this weekend, that I totally forgot to do this post yesterday! Oops. Well, speaking of the event... I'm bringing some herbal goodness with me including some Sleep Pillows. These are the herbs inside them. Gorgeous, huh?

Handmade Holiday Bazaar Post Mortem - Better Late Than Never
Post Mortem = After Death. When I went to school for directing, we would have an analysis with our instructors and mentors after each show we would direct. This was called a Post Mortem.

I had such a wonderful time at the Handmade Holiday Bazaar!! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, the live music was so groovy and such a nice extra, the food (from Limey's) was so yummy, and the women in charge (Stacey of ElleBelle & Julie of SewItsForYou) are the BEST (couldn't ask for nicer or more organized). It was so great meeting so many fellow Etsians: both fellow vendors and others stopping by the event to visit: it's nice being able to put a face to the name. I also had a fabulous time chatting with my customers - so many friendly, gracious, and complimentary people! The event was not a huge monetary success for me (I hear the economy is keeping most customers from spending at the craft fairs recently), but I had so much fun anyway it was so worth it.
Scott came with me in the morning to help me set up my tent: it was the first time I was using it. It's a good thing he came, too, I can't imagine how I would have done it alone. As it is, Dan (Stacey of ElleBelle fame's husband) had to help us figure it out (thank you!). I had every intention of having a setup rehearsal before the show, but was never able to get it done. It's super easy now that we know how to do it! Shortly after setup, Scott had to head to work which left me on my own for tear down which was fine until I had to take down the tent. Enter Doug (Mr. Julie of SewItsForYou) who helped me take it down and carry my stuff to my Jeep (thank you!).

Speaking of wind. . . Between the breeze and the sun going down, by the end of the day it was getting a bit chilly. I didn't want to put on my coat, though, because it would have covered up the majority of the chain maille I was wearing. Problem solved easily enough, though. I had been eying the adorable hats, scarves, and dolls by Wonderland Creations and the cool weather gave my the perfect excuse to grab my own monster scarf (there are pockets in tha paws!):

Nitty gritty self analysis:
I need to work on my tent and display. I love my display plaques and hope to use more of them in my tent display in the future (I used four out of the six I had made). In addition to coming up with new ways of showing items on the tables, I want to have one more table and maybe a rack or just something else interesting to look at. Also, if I plan on doing ren faires and pirate festivals, I will probably wind up using three walls, so I need to work on how to make the inside of the walls look interesting as well as a way to camouflage the top of the tent. I may have to recruit my MIL who has crazy sewing skills to help.
Another plus was my armor: many people were drawn into my tent simply out of curiosity when they saw my coif and mantle. Of course nobody at the craft fair bought armor, but it served the exact purpose I brought it for: to be eye catching. Once they were in, two things happened:
1. They started looking at my other work.
2. They asked questions about the armor which led to a greater appreciation of chain maille.
I loved* it when they asked questions because it gave me the perfect opportunity to take out a piece of wire and explain that every single ring in every single piece in my tent started from that. I explained to them that I coiled and cut all of my own rings before I was able to weave them into the pieces they saw before them.
I also had my pliers with me so that I could demonstrate the weaving process. I was making some more of the samples that I give out with my purchases:

Overall, it was an excellent day and I really hope that Stacey and Julie organize another one!
PS -
Dear Blog,
I know I've been neglecting you. I am sorry. I will update more regularly, I promise. I promise to tell you about more women warriors, I know how much you love to learn about them. I also want to share with you some of the amazing Etsy items I've gotten recently. And maybe more fun than anything else: I've had the good fortune to receive a few giveaways recently (I never win anything and have been graced with a few!). I plan on spreading the good karma and will start to have a blog giveaway soon, too!
Thank you for being so understanding,
Janine

I am very excited to announce that you'll be able to visit Athena's Armoury in person at the Handmade Holiday Bazzar! I'll be selling all of my maille goodies from the shop plus some more not yet listed including some holiday ornaments and all kinds of fun, funky earrings. I'll also be giving a demo on how to coil and cut your own jump rings and a short tute on how to make a basic weave and some variations that can be done to it. Fiberologie, Elle Belle, and Sew It's For You are all doing various demos and workshops as well! It sounds like it's going to be a really fun day and I'm so looking forward to it.
More info to come as the date gets closer, but for now here's some info from the Handmade Holiday Bazaar blog:

Kids Kottage Craft Fair Postmortem
Sadly, most of the pictures I took that day came out fuzzy. And yes, that's a fitted sheet on my table -- I swear the label said flat. Sigh.
When I was in college, I studied directing for theatre. After each student directed show, we would get together with our own mentor and teachers and analyze how the show went from start to finish. We would call this our postmortem. . .
Okay, so the craft fair was not a stupendous success, but it wasn't an entire waste either. I mainly got practice doing one: the prep work, all of the set up, selling my wares, etc. Actually, I don't really
I also met fellow Etsy seller Megan of meganclynch and fellow Etsy seller / Florida Etsy Street Team member Stacey of Elle Belle. You can see Stacey's set up here and Megan's here. Check out more pictures of my set up at my flickr.

Cramming to Get Ready for Craft Fair on Saturday!
This was my table from a psychic fair a friend from work invited me to show at. This is from a LONG time ago when I was involved with beaded and wire wrapped jewelry, hemp, and candles. I had only just discovered chain maille and only had three pieces of it with me.
I found out yesterday that I can vend (free of charge) at a fair on Saturday. Well, it's really a grand opening of an art and activity center for kids that is hosting a craft fair as part of their grand opening celebration. I had been reluctant to do it because I didn't think it would be my demographic, but the more I thought about it. . .
Well, I'm hurriedly trying to figure out my display and some more kid friendly items. I'm a little stressed out about it because I have so little time to prepare. The way I figure it: worse case scenario, I get to spend the day enjoying being outside which is a luxury I rarely afford myself; best case, well, we all know best case is making some sales and meeting some people. I think I'm going to bring some of my beaded and wire wrapped jewelry, hemp for the kiddies, and my DIY Necklace Kits (with gemstones and sterling silver findings) in addition to my maille to try and tap more people's interest.
I also think I'm going to bring some rings and my pliers and do some demos. I wish I was in the middle of a large project to show and make it more interesting.
My to do list also includes all kinds of businessy kinds of things that need to get done, too, like: price tags, promo stuff, displays, bags for purchases, maybe making some kind of banner.
Here are some awesome fair tips from Amanda (aka MrsDragon) at her blog The Dragon's Wares.
What do you do to get ready for a fair? What's the one fair item you can't live without?
